What euro adoption simplified for a Japanese company
Bulgaria joined the euro area on 1 January 2026. It removed one conversion step. It did not change the tax code, and it did not remove your yen exposure.
Bulgaria joined the euro area on 1 January 2026. The practical effect for a Japanese group is narrower than the headlines suggest, and worth stating precisely.
What changed. Contracting, invoicing and settlement with a Bulgarian supplier in euro no longer pass through a lev conversion. A Bulgarian entity can join an existing euro cash pool rather than sit beside it, and group treasury stops carrying a separate Bulgarian currency line.
What did not change. The yen to euro exposure is exactly what it was. Transfer pricing documentation, VAT registration thresholds and what the revenue authority asks in a first audit are matters of Bulgarian and EU tax law, not of which currency is in use. Anyone telling you the euro changed those is selling something.
We cover both halves at the session on 22 October, with people who have run it.
